We hope that everyone had a great holiday and that you took some time off to enjoy friends and family. We have an exciting year ahead of us starting the year off with a visit from Microsoft on January 16 at 1:00PM. On the agenda for the January 16 meeting is SharePoint, Exchange, Live Communications server and more. Microsoft has assembled a great team for this event, so bring all of your Microsoft centric questions to the event!
Next up on February 13 we will be hosting Oracle. Oracle is extremely excited about coming out to discuss their suite of services and solutions. I usually align Oracle with Fortune 1000 companies however they have a clear play in the small/medium size business market; this will be a very informative meeting. We look forward to another great year so spread the word and enjoy!

Silicon Mechanics (http://www.siliconmechanics.com) outdid themselves with a great presentation on server hardware, including an informational look into the environmental concerns that data centers are facing worldwide. Discussion and participations was excellent. There were a lot of new faces in the crowd, welcome and thank you for your support. Send in your O’Reilly book orders by Wednesday of next week so that they will be in by next meeting (Microsoft – January 16). Remember to write reviews on the books that you receive; let’s try to get at least 4 reviews in before the next order. If you want a shirt from Silicon Mechanics, send in an email with your size. Thanks again for a great meeting, and continue spreading the word!

Thanks again to everyone for coming to the last meeting, a very big turnout! The presentation on Vmware was very informative and well received. A big “Thank You†goes out to Vmware and the EMC team from Portland for making this event possible. If you would like additional information from Vmware, please send us an email at info at coisug dot info. Congratulations to those that won the Vmware Workstation licenses and the video iPod!
We are growing fast and people are having a great time networking, sharing ideas and experiences. COISUG is already a huge success; did you know that we have already helped people find and land jobs? If you have yet to come to a meeting, drop in and find out what everyone is talking about. In December we have Silicon Mechanics, out of Washington, stopping by to talk shop about Servers, Blades and where the industry is heading. Have a great month and thanks again.

COISUG is actively working with the CIS Department at COCC to help support their Information Systems mentoring program. The program is designed to put “students in the workforce” to learn hard skills and interpersonal skills necessary to pursue a carreer in Information Systems. What a great way to help out our community! All of us can participate in one way or another.

VMWare is on their way out in November to give a presentation on Virtualization and consolidation. This should be a really informative presentation; so bring your questions and pen/paper. Some of us have already taken the plunge, others have dabbled and a few are still scoping out the landscape. This is the meeting to put your questions on the table and get a good look into extending and building a virtual infrastructure.

What a cool October meeting on Disaster Recovery. NetApp lead a very informative and eye opening presentation on VTL (Virtual Tape Library) and their associated SAN products. I was completely in the dark on VTL and after their presentation had a good idea on how our company could benefit from such an implementation. NetApp offered up a good solution and a great techncal discussion. A big thanks goes out to all that made the meeting and to NetApp (Clint, Rick, Sam and Ross) for sponsoring a great event. Congrats to Larry at Quantum Communication, the winner of the iPod Zune. We also had many winners of Bluetooth Headsets for bringing a friend to the meeting.

The September meeting was quite a hit! Thank you to Enterasys for putting on a great presentation and leading some great discussion on Intrusion Detection and Prevention. It is not until you see IDS in action that you understand its importance. If you are interested in the COISUG presentation from the meeting you can download it here. Congrats to the staff from Bend Memorial Clinic, the big winner of the iPod Zune. As always there were a few new faces in the crowd – great to have you there.
